Mission Statement

826DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind we provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

Welcome to Jen Girdish's page!

Do you remember the first time you ever fell into the world of a great story?

What about the joy of discovering that you too held the power to express yourself through writing? And how about the moment - and we hope there were many - when someone gave you enough attention to make writing fun, understandable and a source of pride for you?

These are the moments Capitol Letters Writing Center is bringing to D.C.'s students. You can help us!

Capitol Letters is changing the face of creative writing for D.C. students. We support and challenge students through workshops, tutoring, and student publications that complement the classroom goals of educators. You can help us reach many more students through your financial contribution to Capitol Letters.

Our primary goal is to open a creative writing center in 2009 that will help thousands of young DC writers. We currently run workshops in public schools throughout the District with over 40 volunteers, a distinguished board of directors and a host of scheduled programming. Local bookstore Politics & Prose supported our vision enough to loan us space for workshops and we're partnering with the District's ProUrban Youth program to help young people in D.C.'s youth centers. In addition to raising funds to open our center, we also need your donation to hire full-time staff to help coordinate all of these great activities.

Once we have a permanent location, we'll be able to serve the needs of our students and educators even more effectively with the following offerings:

  • Field Trips - Educators will be able to come to the center for a fun, energetic story making and bookmaking workshop.

  • Evening/Weekend Workshops - Ranging from playwriting to slam poetry, these will offer a variety of ways to get students engaged and excited about writing.

  • Continued In-School Sessions - Working closely with educators, we will supplement their efforts and customize workshops to meet their students' needs.

  • Drop-in Tutoring - After every school day, students of all ages can bring their homework to our center for individual help in any subject.

  • Student Publications - We'll work with a local high school's students to write, edit and compile their work into an anthology for publication.

How You Can Help

As a team member of the Capitol Letters Writing Center, I am committed to raising $500 to help us open our doors to thousands of DC-area students. Please help me reach (or even exceed!) my goal by clicking on my Donate button. With your generosity, we can all share in the joy of knowing that we are helping to inspire a new generation of young writers that will last a lifetime.
