Mission Statement

826DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind we provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

Report from Politics & Prose Teen Fiction Workshop pt. 2

Here's an excerpt from one of the rotation/collaborative stories:
~Jenny and Jeremy were so thrilled to be visiting their great Aunt in Translavania.
~"Wipee!" said Jenny. "Wahoo!" said Jeremy. "Hi Aunt Krigespintannia!"
~"Its nice to see you here in southern North Dakota."
~"You betcha - is that a buffalo hat you're wearing?"
~"Yep, I got it on my trip to Canada with my cousin George."
~"Oh! George is such a crazy guy! What's he up to these days?"
~Actually, while he/she was saying that, George was out karate chopping blocks with his head.
~"I challenge anyone who thinks they have a harder head than me!"
~No one accepted my challenge.
~So I hopped on my trusty steed and travelled around the world to search for my foe.

The last Sunday of every month, CLWC hosts a writing workshop for students ages 10+. The workshop is free and open to the public. Our next one is on February 22 from 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. If you'd like to sign-up please email PD@capitolletters.org.
