Mission Statement
826DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.
With this in mind we provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

This summer, CLWC is teaming up with different student programs around the area to bring weekly workshops into their classrooms.
Tuesdays at the Multicultural Services Center bring the Going Green workshop series, in which students make zines, pen jingles, and dream up skits on the theme of going green. On July 7th, CLWC volunteers helped lead the first Going Green workshop. After a discussion about how we're hurting the environment and how we can make changes to help keep our environment sustainable, the class broke into small groups to brainstorm “green” topics and learn how to make their very own zines. Students’ zines covered topics like turning off the lights when they're not being used, creating laws against smoking, and making our daily routines more environmentally friendly.
On Thursdays, CLWC is working with the students of the National Council of La Raza's Upward Bound program and with Asian American LEAD to learn about interviewing, writing ledes, and creating newsletters through the Being the Change workshop and AA LEAD Newsletter. After interviewing people they feel are making a change, the students of NCLR Upward Bound will create articles for a class blog. The students of Asian American LEAD, who have conducted interviews reflecting on their past year’s experience with the program, are producing a newsletter to share the interviews.
Stay tuned for more updates on CLWC's summer slate of workshops!
