Mission Statement

826DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind we provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

Workshop at Learn-a-Palooza

Saturday, May 10, 04:00 PM - 05:00 PM @ Cafe Collage (link)

Want to see some of our volunteers in action? This weekend, circus fans of all ages are invited to a free workshop:

Who: You! And Capitol Letters stars William Bert, Grace Wang, and Matt Klam
What: How to Create a Memorable Character
When: 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturday, May 10
Where: Cafe Collage, 1346 T Street, NW
Why: Because before you can write that great novel or smash screenplay, you've got to have great characters.
RSVP: No need! Just show up with your favorite pen and notebook.

In this workshop we'll discuss qualities that make for memorable, well-rounded, fascinating characters, and introduce some quick exercises for sketching some.

Learn-A-PaloozaThis workshop is just one of more than 50 free workshops being offered this weekend as part of the second annual Learn-a-Palooza, a jam-packed day when all sorts of people will share their skills and interests with their neighbors. You can spend the afternoon learning about giant pandas, photography, and cooking in Adams Morgan; personal finance and international volunteerism in Dupont Circle; and even "How to Be a Brazen Burlesque Dancer" on Capitol Hill.
